Psalm 121:1-2
"I lift my eyes up to the mountains--where does my help come
from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth."
This whole Psalm really shows God's care and protection for us. But v. 1-2, "looking up to the mountains" and waiting for help really reminds me of rescue in a moment of greatest need. In particular, this description makes me think back vividly to the final scenes of the movie, "The Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers", to the Battle of Helm's Deep... just when all seemed lost and the enemy was overwhelming, Aragorn looks to the hills and what does he see? Gandalf, in a blaze of white light, with a horde of reinforcements. He stormed to the aide of the Fellowship. That's a helper from the hills. That's a rescuer.
And that's my God. He's the 'Maker of the universe' (v. 2), HUGE!... yet, "He will not let your foot slip" (v. 3) and "He will watch over your coming and going, both now and forever" (v. 8). The huge, awesome, gigantic, world-spinning God is personal! He wants to get to know ME! God is my aid to do what needs to be done, day by day, moment by moment... He's my help in even the little things...
Just like in Matthew 7, when Jesus tells us how God loves to give to His children, loves helping them love their neighbors as themselves. God aids us. Helps us. In overcoming. In doing right. In any battle where we find ourselves just lifting up our eyes to the mountains in desperation.
The title of "Helper" for God also has an important implication: that I need help. That I am lacking something--but not only that. It also means that God and God alone has exactly what will fill my need. God is my helper... my job is not my helper, my friends are not my helper, a car is not my helper, a boyfriend is not my helper, money is not my helper. None of those things can fill my lacking strength. Only God can! Only He gets that title!
And then, best of all, is God's collossal, unfathomable rescue plan and aid for all of mankind: His Son, Jesus, dying on the cross and being raised 3 agonizing days later, so that weak and filthy humans like us could come to see Him. (!!!)
Thank God that He is our Helper today!
